Today I will talk about a subject that is very important to me and to which I am very careful: the INCI of cosmetics!
You all know what I am talking about? Of the ingredients contained in our favorite cosmetics!
What do Paraffinum liquidum, Mineral Oil, Petrolatum, Propylene Glycol, PEG, PPG, MEA, TEA, DEA, methylparaben, Buylparaben, Tetrasodium EDTA, Cyclopentasiloxane, SLS, SLES all mean?
Are they really good for our skin? But above all, are they bad for our health?
After many months of gathering information and documents on what they really are, I decided to share with you everything I have learned!
INCI stands for International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients. The ingredients are reported in descending order, starting from the one that's present in greater quantity.
These are the ingredients to be avoided.
Petrolates: Paraffinum liquidum, Petrolatum, Microcrystalline Wax, Mineral Oil, Vaseline.
They are all derived from petrol. They are production wastes which are refined and used in cosmetics. Petrolatum are used as emollients, solvents, antistatic agents, for viscosity and smoothing. On the skin it gives a wonderful feeling of velvet, but it is fallacious. This creates an impermeable film on the skin that will not let it breathe and over time can give rise to allergies, irritation, asphyxiated skin. Plus they are not environmentally friendly, and are highly polluting.
They are also comedogenic and considered cancerous of type II.
Dispelling the legend of the famous Johnson's Baby Oil, mainly composed of parrafin, which makes everything except moisturize the skin. I would not even put it on my feet, let alone on the skin of a newborn!
Triethanolamine, often indicated as TEA.
This ingredient is used in cosmetic preparations as a pH balancer. In contact with the skin it can release nitrosamines, cancerous substances, dangerous for the lymphatic system.
Even MEA and DEA, compounds with Cocamide, are to be avoied. They are colorless liquids, highly toxic and irritating.
PARABENS:methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, etc..
They are used as preservatives in cosmetics. They are of synthetic origin, so pollutants. Some parabens have been proven to slightly mimic the behavior of estrogen. Also by prolonged use, recent studies considered that they interfere with the endocrine system.
Tetrasodium EDTA.
it's a sequestering agent, a substance that "sequesters" the metallic ions present in a preparation and turns rancid the present oils. This happens because in the industries some types of products pass into metal pipes, and so a part of the metals is absorbed by the product. EDTA is toxic for aquatic organisms because it mobilizes heavy metals from the bottom of the sea and poisons the fish, even those who eat it!
Fortunately there is now a new less polluting sequestering agent which is degraded by sunlight, but that is not always used, wich is the sodium editronate!
SILICONES: Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone, etc..
Not at all environmental friendly and biodegradable. They are used because of their film-forming properties that condition and give shine to the hair. For this reason they are present in most shampoos and conditioners, creating a waterproof layer on the hair. We also find them in creams and make-up products because they give the skin a radiant and soft effects, but it's not our skin, it is the effect of silicones.
PEG and PPG.
They are derived from petrol and are used as emulsifying/ surfactants/emollients and make sure that the substances are absorbed better by the skin. They are followed by numbers, for example PEG-4, PEG-9, which indicate their molecular weight.
TRICLOSAN.
Substance present in deodorants as fungicide and antibacterial. It's a substance to be avoided because it tends to accumulate in the tissues of humans and in breast milk. Its accumulation can impair liver and lungs function and may cause infertility.
SLS and SLES.
Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureh sulfate (SLES) surfactants are very harsh to the skin. The surfactants in the bath foams and shampoos are essential because they are the washing agents, but we must be careful because if they are too much aggressive, their degreasing action may be too strong, this can irritate and damage the hydrolipidic film of the skin. Without forgetting that they are highly polluting. So you have to choose cleaning products that contain mild surfactants such as sodium lauryl sarcosinate.
Naturally there are many other harmful ingredients, but these are the ones that have impressed me the most. My aim is to make a responsible consumption, I try to look carefully at the INCI of cosmetics that I buy. If I see that a product contains junk I put it back in place and look at the next one. I try to pay attention to what comes in contact with my skin and what ends up in the sea because of me.
I challenge you to go into your bathroom and look for a product that does not contain at least one of these ingredients!

Fanno veramente bene alla nostra pelle? Ma sopratutto, sono dannosi per la nostra salute?
Dopo molti mesi che raccolgo informazioni e mi documento su cosa realmente siano, ho deciso di condividere con voi tutto ciò che ho appreso!
INCI sta per International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients. Gli ingredienti sono riportati da quello presente in quantità maggiore a quello minore.
Ecco gli ingredienti da evitare assolutamente.
PETROLATI: Paraffinum liquidum, Petrolatum, Cera Microcristallina, Mineral oil, Vaselina.
Sono tutti di derivazione petrolifera. Sono scarti di produzione che vengono raffinati e utilizzati nella cosmesi. I petrolati vengono usati come emollienti, solventi, antistatici, viscosizzanti, leviganti. Sulla pelle danno una splendida sensazione di velluto, ma è fallace. Questi creano una pellicola impermeabile sulla pelle che non la lascia respirare e a lungo andare possono dare origine ad allergie, irritazioni, pelle asfittica, e non sono ecocompatibili, quindi altamente inquinanti.
Inoltre sono comedogeni e considerati cangerogeni di tipo II.
Sfatiamo il mito del celeberrimo Olio Johnson Baby, composto principalmente da parrafina, che fa tutto tranne che idratare la pelle. Non lo metterei mai neanche sui piedi, figuriamoci sulla pelle di un neonato!!
TRIETHANOLAMINE, spesso indicata con il nome TEA.
Da evitare come la peste! Questo ingrediente è utilizzato nelle preparazioni cosmetiche come equilibratore del pH. A contatto con la pelle può liberare nitrosammine, sostanze cangerogene, pericolosissime per il sistema linfatico.
Sono da evitare anche MEA e DEA, composti con la COCAMIDE, sostanze liquide prive di colore, altamente nocive e irritanti.
PARABENI: methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, ecc.
Sono utilizzati come conservanti nei cosmetici. Sono di origine sintetica, quindi inquinanti. Alcuni parabeni hanno dimostrato di mimare debolmente il comportamento degli estrogeni. Inoltre facendone un uso prolungato e quotidiano, recenti studi ritengono che interferiscano con il sistema endocrino.
TETRASODIUM EDTA.
E' un sequestrante, una sostanza che "sequestra" gli ioni metallici presenti in un preparato e che fanno irrancidire gli olii presenti. Ciò accade perchè nelle industrie certi tipi di prodotti passano in tubi metallici, e quindi una parte dei metalli viene assorbita dal prodotto. L'EDTA è tossico per gli organismi acquatici perchè mobilita i metalli pesanti dal fondo del mare ed
avvelenano i pesci, anche quelli che mangiamo!
Fortunatamente adesso esiste un nuovo sequestrante meno inquinante che si degrada con la luce del sole, ma che non sempre viene usato: il sodium editronate!!
SILICONI: cyclopentasiloxane, dimethicone ecc.
Non sono affatto ecocompatibili e biodegradabili. Sono usati perchè grazie alle loro proprietà filmogene condizionano e conferiscono lucentezza ai capelli e per questo motivo sono presenti nella maggior parte dei
balsami e shampoo, creando uno strato impermeabile sul capello. Li troviamo anche in creme e prodotti per il make up perchè conferiscono alla pelle un aspetto radioso e morbido, ma non è la nostra pelle, è l'effetto del silicone.
PEG e PPG.
Sono di derivazione petrolifera, vengono usati come emulsionanti/tensioattivi/emollienti e fanno in modo che le sostanze vengano assorbite meglio permeabilizzando la pelle. Sono seguiti da numeri, es: PEG-4, PEG-9, che indicano il loro peso molecolare.
TRICLOSAN.
Sostanza presente nei deodoranti come fungicida e antibatterico. E' una sostanza assolutamente da evitare perchè tende ad accumularsi nei tessuti degli esseri viventi e nel latte materno. Il suo accumulo può alterare la funzionalità epatica e polmonare e può provocare sterilità.
SLS e SLES.
Sodium lauril sulfate (SLS) e sodium laureh sulfate (SLES) sono tensioattivi aggressivissimi per la pelle. I tensioattivi nei bagnoschiuma e negli shampoo sono fondamentali perchè sono gli agenti lavanti, però bisogna stare attenti perchè, se troppo aggressivi, la loro azione sgrassante può risultare troppo energica, tutto questo può irritare e rovinare il film idrolipidico della pelle. Senza dimenticare che sono molto inquinanti. Quindi bisogna scegliere detergenti che contengano tensioattivi delicati e non aggressivi come ad esempio il sodium lauril sarcosinate.
Naturalmente di ingredienti nocivi ce ne sarebbero tanti altri, ma questi sono quelli che mi hanno colpito di più. Il mio obiettivo è quello di fare un consumo consapevole, cerco di guardare attentamente l'INCI dei cosmetici che compro. Se vedo che un prodotto contiene schifezze lo rimetto nello scaffale e passo al prossimo. Cerco di stare molto attenta a ciò che viene a contatto con la mia pelle e ciò che va a finire in mare grazie a me.
Vi sfido ad andare nel vostro bagno e cercare un prodotto che non contenga almeno uno di questi ingredienti!
